Cambodia Could be the Venue for a Meeting to Find a Solution to Myanmar’s Conflict

Phnom Penh: The Cambodian Foreign Minister, Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhon has said that since Cambodia is already chairing ASEAN in 2022, Cambodia can summon the parties to the conflict of the Union of Myanmar to physically meet in Cambodia or use online meetings.

Responding to a question from EAC News regarding the location of the Myanmar Dispute Resolution Meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhon has replied that Cambodia was able to hold these meetings, including the ASEAN Five-Point Resolution Meeting on Myanmar as well.

"Our meeting is all about calling, Both the Government of Myanmar, the donors, the Special Envoy, and the Secretary-General of ASEAN, etc. Come together and put it on the table. [...] We can think that Cambodia will be able to organize any meeting that is difficult to do in Myanmar or difficult to do in any other country because we are the chairman, so we can convene in person or via video conferencing.”

Following the ASEAN chairmanship in 2022, Prime Minister Hun Sen has traveled to Myanmar yesterday to meet with military leader Min Aung Hlaing, and the Myanmar military government has promised to extend the ceasefire until the end of 2022 to facilitate the acceptance process. Assistance from ASEAN, as well as facilitating the ASEAN Special Envoy to visit Myanmar to meet with all parties to the conflict in the country, including ethnic armed groups.

The crisis in Myanmar stems from the military coup that took place on 1 February 2021, the arrest of State Councilor Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint and other ruling party officials by the Myanmar Armed Forces. Declaring non-recognition of the election results in November 2020 and handing over the leadership of the country to the Commander-in-Chief of the National Army, Min Aung Hlaing.

The coup has angered the people of Myanmar, who have staged a series of protests as armed groups oppose the military regime.

Myanmar is now a country with two governments and about 20 ethnic armed groups, which has caused one of the longest wars in the world
